The Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA) provides options to the elderly who are at risk of losing their independence and to the Caregivers of those persons. Through a coordination of services, Seniors are able to live with dignity in the comfort of their own homes at a much lower cost than nursing facility care. Elderly and Disabled Medicaid Waiver
The Medicaid Waiver Program is designed to provide services for elderly and disabled low income, fully Medicaid eligible people, who without assistance, would have to be cared for in a nursing home.
It is called a Waiver Program because monies traditionally utilized for nursing
home care can now be used for care in the individual's home.
There is no age limit for this program. The Medicaid Waiver Program offers Case Management, Homemaker services, Respite Care, Personal Care, Home-delivered (weekly) frozen meals, Adult Day Health Care and Companion services. These services are paid for by Alabama Medicaid.
Alabama Cares
The Alabama Cares Program is part of the National Family Caregiver Support Program. It provides services to help caregivers continue caregiving efforts which allows care-recipients to remain in the community rather than seeking institutional care.
In-Home Services
The seven counties served by SARCOA each offer limited services for homebound older individuals through their In-Home Service programs. Individuals must be 60 years or older and homebound.
