Coffee County students helping seniors

The science club of Dauphin Junior High School in Enterprise, Ala., recently presented SARCOA with a $1,050 donation designated to helping Coffee County seniors.

Science Club President Hannah May and other members of the club presented Robert Crowder, SARCOA executive director, with a check on April 27 in an informal ceremony at the school that included Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell and club sponsor Sandra Everhart.

Science club members raised the money over two weeks selling candles.

Boswell called the students ‘future leaders’ and commended them for looking outside the usual scope of charity and identifying disadvantaged seniors as an underserved group.

“This is an important group of young people,” Boswell said. “They have identified an important need.”

Crowder assured the students that the donation will be used to serve the citizens of Coffee County as requested. He said a possible use of the money is Hungry to Help, SARCOA’s sponsored home delivered meal program for home-bound seniors.

For more information on Hungry to Help or other senior services, visit www.sarcoa.org or call 800-239-3507. SARCOA is an area agency on aging serving Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties.
